Deer hunting can take a lifetime to master. But, you can get a head start on bagging your first buck if you follow these 10 deer hunting tactics and strategies:
10. Shower with a Scent-Free Soap
Firstly, be sure to shower with a scent-free soap. Deer have much better senses of smell than we do, so you’d be wise to get rid of your body odor without layering on any fragrance before you suit up and head out on your next hunt.
9. Use Odor Eliminator Often
By the same token, make sure to use odor eliminator not just when you start your expedition but also after you climb into your tree stand (if you plan to use a stand, that is).
Odor eliminator can mask your scent for hours on end and prevent bucks from getting spooked as they near your hunting location.
8. Examine Your Hunting Area Beforehand
Your hunting location is also crucial. Use Google Earth and other satellite tools to examine your hunting area beforehand and plan out your route, as well as where you plan to set up your tree stand.
7. Use Tree Stand Blinds
A good way to increase the effectiveness of your tree stand – and to make the stand more comfortable – is to install blinds.
Blinds can increase your camouflage, plus protect you from inclement weather to a limited extent.
6. Be Patient
Patience is a virtue, especially when deer hunting. Don’t get anxious for the kill shot and start hunting bucks by prowling around.
Stay in your tree stand and wait for your bait to draw them in. If you have chosen your spot well, it’ll only be a matter of time.

5. Use the Wind to Your Advantage
The wind can make or break your hunting expedition. Try to position yourself so that the wind blows away from you, and also away from where you expect deer to approach your tree stand.
4. Target Practice is Key
Before heading out on any hunting expedition, be sure to clock plenty of time at the gun range.
Even accomplished marksmen need to reinforce their skills from time to time. You won’t get the perfect kill shot if you haven’t practiced with your weapon enough before your actual hunt.
3. Hunt Through Lunch
Lots of hunters take a lunch break and loudly stomp out of the woods to return to their trucks or base camps.
Do yourself a favor and pack a lunch you can eat in your tree stand. It’ll be quieter and you might get lucky with a buck that approaches during the crucial hours between morning and afternoon.
2. Stay Quiet
Silence is golden, so practice being silent for long hours without rustling around in your tree stand or fiddling with your tools and gear. Even the smallest sound can spook a buck away.
1. Look for Open Water in Winter
If you’re hunting deer in the winter, try to position yourself near open water sources. Lots of ponds and streams will be frozen over, limiting the places where bucks can get access to liquid water.
If you can find a great water source such as a lake, you can be sure a buck will show up eventually.
Outsmart skittish deer and play the field to your advantage with these 10 expert tips.
